In Leningrad he led the band Aquarium for many years in a scene not dissimilar to the Grateful Dead’s. Mr. Grebenshikov himself once commented that Aquarium was "not just a band, it’s a way of life."

Now, more or less out on his own, Boris has achieved legendary status at home and is seeking a Western audience with a Columbia Records album, "Radio Silence." It’s a slick offering, produced by the Eurythmics’ Dave Stewart, and featuring Annie Lennox and Chrissie Hynde on backing vocals. The Russian seems to be striving for sincerity on the album, and there are some poetic moments, but it’s mostly bland as overcooked borscht, weighed down by all that hefty talent. Live, perhaps Mr. Grebenshikov will strip down his sound and let it fly. . . .
